"Choosing to be a part of Empoder's #TeachCS was one of the best decisions of my life! In 3 weeks these middle school girls have grasped CS concepts that took me a full year to learn. It shows that anybody can succeed if only they are given the opportunity!"

My experience at Empoder was incredibly enriching, and was marked by both professional and personal development as we tackled the challenges facing middle school girls from underserved backgrounds who are interested in Computer Science. Having a positive impact on the Empoder students cemented my own interest in pursuing a STEM degree. I also had the great experience of working with and developing bonds with many other talented volunteers - and with Marissa, who is very dedicated to increasing CS education to the underrepresented, and has a great vision for the program."

"Teaching at Empoder as part of the #TeachCS program was one of the most enriching experiences of my life! I not only developed my passion for CS, but I also formed enriching bonds with young girls who face a number of personal and socioeconomic obstacles. Empoder provided these girls with a safe space, both emotionally and academically, to take risks and pursue their interests in a field that historically excludes them. I am so glad I was able to make the world of computer science a bit more accessible to a group of intelligent and driven young girls."

"Even though Silicon Valley is the heart of the tech industry, the diversity gap in Computer-Science is huge. While there are efforts to engage females & minority groups in STEM, Empoder is one of the only organizations who's reaching out to Latino(a)s specifically, despite them making up nearly a fourth of the local population. During the two years I volunteered as a #TeachCS teacher with Empoder, I developed a love for teaching & education, and really felt I was empowering the local underserved community in a unique and impactful way."

"My experience at Empoder was extremely rewarding and eye-opening as I worked alongside my peers and introduced Computer Science fundamentals to young girls from underserved backgrounds who historically have little to no exposure to careers in STEM. I formed very strong and understanding bonds with my students and learned about their experiences and dreams. Having such a positive and encouraging impact on the young girls cemented my confidence and choice in pursuing CS as my major and inspired my future career goals. I’m extremely happy to see Empoder continuing this amazing and eye-opening experience and empowering young girls into STEM fields!

"For me, I gained a lot personally as part of Empoder's #TeachCS program. Not only did it help me learn how to talk better and communicate technical details to a less technical audience, but also I felt that I made a difference in helping these girls develop a love for computer-science that they never imagined they could have. Now, I’m a data scientist at Blue Shield and I still have fond memories of volunteering with Empoder in high-school. Overall, it was an extremely meaningful and gratifying experience!”
